Well, we blinked and short little Feb was gone!! March has lots of good things in store. I know I’m a few days early, but I wanted to get my newsletter out before leaving for my “My Toes Are Numb” tour of MN and WI!
Things have been beautiful and sunny here in Oregon but I hear the rain returns this week. I had epic good times in Sisters and Bend last month, as well as couple of hometown gigs and a songwriting workshop with some wonderful folks. I love my job!

1. GRATITUDE…Special thanks to Brad and Kerani and everyone at the Sisters Folk Festival Winter Concerts, to the Sisters High School Americana Project students, to Foghorn String Band, to JoAn Mann – ever gracious hostess, and to Anne Weiss for friendship and collaboration and amazing artistry and to Eric for driving, to Steve and Debbie Gibson, Cross Current and Walker T Ryan and all the folks at Oakshire for helping to raise money for Opportunity Village Eugene, and to the Avalonians for a wonderful afternoon workshop full of heart and inspiration!
2. THE NEWS…March is shaping up to be jam packed! Not quite as crazy as the time I played 32 college shows in March, but busy nonetheless! I am thrilled to play solo shows at three wonderful venues in MN and WI, and then join my buddy Dave Stoddard for more fun and harmonies!
Also, it turns out you can drive to MT from Portland! I’m excited to explore new territory there in March thanks to my fabulous booking agent Renee, and I will have my fingers and toes crossed for beautiful weather there as I play shows in Bozeman, Missoula, and White Sulphur Springs.
April is not so shabby either. From a band show with the great Tyler Fortier in Cottage Grove to an in-the-round evening in Lewisville, TX with songwriting greats Tom Faulkner and Michael Hearne to superb house concerts in WA, I simply have to pinch myself sometimes!
Speaking of Florida, anybody in the sunshine state want to host a concert on Friday, April 10? We’ll have a blast and my toes will dance. Holler at me at bethwoodmusic@hotmail.com if you have ideas!
My songwriting workshop here in Eugene went so well and was SO much fun that I would like to do more. Especially when I’m out on the road, I think it could work really nicely to do an afternoon workshop before an evening peformance. Let me know if you have thoughts, feedback and/or interest in this idea — I’d love to hear from you!
My poetry book is finally becoming a reality. Every day it becomes more book-like. 🙂 It’s amazing how much work goes into culling, grouping, ordering, and proof-reading. Just like making an album, it becomes all-consuming so that I can’t think of much else! I am doing my final proof-read this week before sending off for the real work to begin. As of now, the title I am going with is “Kazoo Symphonies” but that could change at any moment. Runner-up is “The Open Window”. I want to thank all of you who have encouraged me in my poetry, especially Dr. Nathan Brown. I am SO excited about this book! Both Nathan Brown and Tom Kimmel inspire me as they both weave poetry and songs into their concerts, adding another dimension of artistry. I hope to do the same!
Many of you have asked if I can share some music in my newsletters, and I love that! The TV show Troubadour, TX has been running some of my songs in recent episodes. It’s so much fun to be a part of this and reach people with my music I otherwise never would have reached! I found this gem that they recently posted…from the Troubaour, TX outdoor show in Addison, TX, a fun version of “Doing This Dance” with Tom Faulkner on percussion and vocals and Daran DaShazo on guitar. Woohoo!

Fri, Feb 27 – Grassroots Concerts – Nisswa, MN. 5459 Co. Rd. 18. 218-829-4092. Concerts held at the Live Well Nightclub and Coffee Bar at the Journey Church. GRASSROOTS CONCERTS are the nonprofit cultural offerings of a small, happy society of largely omnivorous but gentle folk dedicated to the preservation of live entertainment in vicarious times. At all shows, seating is first-come, first-served. At each concert, GRASSROOTS welcomes your nonperishable food (or cash) donation to a local food shelf. Admission is $10 at the door for adults and $5 for children under 12 with listening attention, when accompanied by an adult. Housed in a re-purposed municipal waterworks structure, the organization offers a wide range of visual and performing arts opportunities that utilize the venue’s theater, 3 art galleries, classroom, pottery studio, and meeting areas. Twin vaulted wood ceilings and historic woodwork accent the remodeled interior of the fully accessible cultural center.The Pump House Regional Arts Center is home to award winning concerts, drama, exhibits, comedy, films, classes and more. Sat, Mar 7 – New York Mills Cultural Center – New York Mills, MN. The New York Mills Cultural Center is a rural center for creativity, community vitality, and lifelong learning in the arts. We offer visitors intimate opportunities to encounter art and artists in our 80-seat concert listening room, two art galleries in a historic building, a gift store featuring local artists, an artist residency program, a sculpture park, and a folk school where everyone can learn to practice a variety of fine and folk arts. Wed, Mar 25 – Live From The Divide – Bozeman, MT. 627 East Peach St. LIVE FROM THE DIVIDE is a radio broadcast created simply as a “A Celebration of the American Songwriter”. The 60 minute show features regionally established & legendary songwriters alike. Based out of an intimate 50 person venue and recording facility in Bozeman, Montana. Artists vary their interactions with the crowd, sometimes poking fun at a live audience member or by taking time to explain the origin of the song they are about to perform. The program provides listeners with an unparalleled opportunity to hear songwriters in a natural stripped down and raw setting. With the great Sarah Sample!! $20.

We had so much fun at Music in the Glen at Newport Hills! The great Anne Weiss knocked all of our socks of as usual and then we had a special guest on harp Lynne Hyde…smokin’!!
Whaddya know, it was our host JoAn’s birthday! Her son said she likes chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!

Look at these guys off the leash in the front yard. 🙂 Timber and Coda Update: Well they have us wrapped around their little paws. They love to cuddle as much as they love the ball. Our doggy manners classes are going well and both of them will do just about anything for treats. Happy day!
4. THE FUTURE. I am busy plotting and planning how to make my next recording a reality! I’m excited about capturing the simple essence of songs played just as I wrote them…with only guitar and voice, or piano and voice. I’m thinking back to Patty Griffin’s first album “Living With Ghosts”, a live demo of just her and her guitar, and what a profund impact it had on me as a young artist. The good news is that the project won’t be crazy expensive, and once I’ve figured out the how and the where, I will open up the process and enlist your help! If you have ideas or thoughts, holla!
It’s a busy spring and we’re already booking into 2016. Sometimes with all this planning, it feels like I’m living my life in the future. But the music always brings me back to the moment. I hope to spend as much time in the moment as I can as I believe that magic happens there.
